What To Do When A Tree Breaks On Your Property
Sometimes the trees on your property can go through a lot of stress and damage, and you’ll be left to work out how to fix it. If the tree is broken, can you fix it or do you need to cut it down? The answer very much depends on you and your tree. Here’s what to do if a tree breaks on your property.
Why Has The Tree Broken?
The way your tree has broken will inform what you do to handle the situation. In most cases, a tree will break as a result of bad weather or a storm. High winds can break branches off trees quite easily leaving you with a damaged tree that looks as though it may not survive. In these cases, you may be able to save that tree. It all depends on what was damaged, and how much damage has been done.
In other cases, you may find that the tree has broken due to more severe issues. If the tree is dying or has other problems, branches may be breaking. In these cases, it may be better to remove the tree altogether from your property.
When You Can Save Branches
Sometimes, a branch will be knocked loose or cracked, but you may not need to cut it off. In fact, in some cases, it can actually do more damage by cutting that branch off.
Instead, you can ‘graft’ the branch back together. This will work if there’s simply a crack in the branch, or there’s some cambium, or inner bark, still connected through the break. With smaller branches, you can wrap grafting tape around the crack, and allow the branch to heal over with new bark. If the branch is larger, you can create a splint with wood and twine to support the weight as it heals. Be aware, this won’t work with branches that are holding on with only a thin strip of bark. In these cases, these branches will need to come off.
When You’ll Need To Cut Branches Off
Some branches will be in worse shape, and you won’t be able to save them. In these cases, you’ll need to have them cut off.
If the branch broke, it’s best to cut it off at the collar. Call in an Orlando tree removal company, and they’ll be able to cut them off effectively. Don’t worry if your tree looks rather odd or naked with that branch missing. In most cases, the tree will grow in more foliage to fill the gap.
When The Tree Needs To Be Removed
In some cases, the tree will need to be removed entirely, as it’s too dangerous to leave on your property the way it is.
Take a look at your tree. Are more than 50% of the branches broken? If so, it won’t be able to grow back quickly enough to keep itself alive. If any major branches have broken, the tree may not survive, either. In these cases, the damage is too great, and you’ll need to have the tree removed to protect your property from falling branches and other damage. This is especially important if you have the tree quite close to your home.
To get the tree removed, again you’ll need to hire a tree removal service in order to get it off your property. It’s highly advised that you look into hiring professionals, rather than trying to remove it yourself. If it’s a larger or older tree, it can be a lot of work to get it removed. As well as this, removing a tree can be a dangerous job. You want someone who’s expertly trained to remove it, so you and your property are safe as it’s done.
